Laser welding is an exciting process which is fast becoming a must-have capability for metalworking workshops across many industries. It is typically around 4 times faster than TIG welding and is very easy to learn, allowing operators to quickly produce consistent quality welds even without previous experience.

Our laser welding packages feature the market-leading IPG LightWELD laser welding machines which are easy to use, fast to set up and consistently produce high-quality results.

AN OVERVIEW OF LASER WELDING

Laser welding is a very versatile alternative to traditional welding techniques such as MIG and TIG welding, and is also able to perform pre and post weld cleaning operations in addition to the standard welding functionality. It is able to weld a wide range of materials in thicknesses of up to 6.35mm and can be used with or without filler material.

The IPG LightWELD models feature preset modes to quickly produce high quality results in both welding and cleaning. In addition to this, operators can easily customise settings and save them down for future use, creating a library of settings unique to their own requirements.

Our laser welding packages include the IPG LightWELD units, a laser-safe welding booth with an interlocked door and the required safety equipment to get started. Optional equipment includes wire feeders, welding benches and extraction units.

SAFETY FEATURES

As a laser welding machine is a Class 4 laser product, safe operation is paramount. The machine must be used in a suitable enclosure with an interlocked door preventing access while the laser is activated. In addition to this the operator must use the correct PPE including laser welding goggles. Other safety features of the IPG LightWELD are electrical part contact sensing, preventing use of the laser unless it is in contact with the material, and 2-step trigger control.

THE FUNCTIONS OF IPG LIGHTWELD

WELDING

Laser welding is capable of welding a range of materials up to 6.35mm thick and is able to work with reflective materials, dissimilar materials and even materials with different electrical conductivity. Low heat input reduces material deformation and produces a smaller heat affected zone.

PRE-WELD CLEANING

Laser cleaning allows fast and effective removal of contaminants such as oxides, rust, paint, oil, and grease from surface without the use of chemicals or abrasives, preventing them from entering the weld pool.

POST-WELD CLEANING

Post-weld cleaning removes heat discoloration and creates visually appealing welds while eliminating need for post-weld grinding. Areas up to 15mm wide can be cleaned effectively in one pass.
