Extreme ISF® Process
The Extreme ISF® Process is a suite of chemical and chemical-mechanical surface finishing and polishing technologies including low and high energy isotropic superfinishing technologies. The Extreme ISF Process is capable of removing the extreme surface roughness, surface and near-surface defects (keyhole porosity and the like) inherent to metal AM components while simultaneously improving component dynamic fatigue life and providing a bright, mirror-like surface appearance.
Comprised of two primary process technologies (Chemical Polishing and Chemical-Mechanical Polishing) that can be used individually or in combination, the Extreme ISF Process is compatible with a wide range of component geometries including lattice structures and complex internal passages. Because of REM’s unique chemically assisted technology, the Extreme ISF® Process is also better able to preserve fine features, edges, and overall component geometry than abrasive-only techniques or electrochemical processes. REM has a broad range of alloy processing experience which we are constantly expanding.
REM’s Extreme ISF Alloy Capabilities include:
Titanium Alloys (ex. Ti 6-4, CP Ti)SEM-Cross-Section-Before-After Extreme ISF
Nickel-Chrome Superalloys (ex. IN-625, IN-718, HX)
Iron-Nickel Superalloys (JBK-75, NASA HR1)
Stainless Steels (ex. 17-4, 15-5, 316/316L)
Carbon Steels (ex. Ferrium® C64, SAE4140)
Maraging and Tool Steels (A2, L40, H13)
Copper Alloys (ex. GrCOP-42, GrCOP-84, CP Cu)
Aluminum Alloys (ex. AlSi10Mg, AS7/F357, Scalmalloy®, Al6061 RAM2, A205/A20X)
Nickel Alloys (ex. Invar 36, Permalloy)
Bulk Metallic Glass Alloys
An additional benefit of the Extreme ISF Process technology is that it can be effectively used to ensure complete powder removal in some alloys thereby increasing component cleanliness (improving biocompatibility) and eliminating FOD (foreign object debris) risks.
The Extreme ISF Process can be tailored to specific material removal limitations and is capable of holding tolerances +/- 0.0001″ (~2.5 µm); the process technology can be used to deliver surface finishes as low as 4 µin (0.1 µm) Ra or can be utilized to consistently hit common engineering specifications of <125 µin (3.2 µm), <63 µin (1.6 µm), <32 µin (0.8 µm), or <16 µin (0.4 µm). The Extreme ISF® Process is a robust process technology that is scalable and available via outsourced processing or as a technology installation. Whether your needs are to improve the fatigue life of a rotating turbine engine component or to obtain a jewelry level finish on a decorative component, REM Surface Engineering and our Extreme ISF® Process have the experience and the expertise to meet your needs. Contact us today to learn more or to Start a Project.
ISF® Process
REM’s ISF® Process is the ultra precision application of our isotropic superfinishing technology for subtractively manufactured components. The ISF® Process is a suite of chemically accelerated surface finishing and polishing technologies that generate low Ra surfaces with non-directional/isotropic surface textures and exceptionally high bearing ratios. The ISF® Process can be performed in a variety of standard and/or customized mass finishing apparatuses in order to execute REM’s unique superfinishing method.
Traditional, abrasive-only mass finishing technologies suffer from long cycle times, higher final surface roughnesses, and increased geometric alterations to parts with defined geometries and micro-geometries, such as gears, bearings, and airfoils. REM’s chemically accelerated technology eliminates these drawbacks, allowing reduce cycle times and low roughness surface finishes (Ra<0.1 µm/4 µin or lower). Additionally, the ISF Process is specifically designed to accommodate precision component applications, maintaining complex component shapes such as tight pitch helical gears and airfoil tips with micron-level accuracy and offering the ability to mask surfaces from the process if desired via the use of REM’s Process Aids. REM has a broad range of alloy processing experience which we are constantly expanding to meet customer/project needs. REM’s ISF® Process Alloy Capabilities include: Titanium Alloys (ex. Ti 6-4, CP Ti) Nickel-Chrome Superalloys (ex. IN-625, IN-718, HX) Iron-Nickel Supperalloys (JBK-75, NASA HR1) Stainless Steels (ex. 17-4, 15-5, 316/316L) Carbon Steels (ex. Ferrium® C64, SAE4140, SAE9310, Pryowear® 53) Maraging and Tool Steels (A2, L40, H13) Copper Alloys Aluminum Alloys Nickel Alloys (ex. Invar 36, Permalloy) REM’s ISF® Process is widely used in the aerospace, heavy equipment, medical and other industries due to its unparalleled range of performance benefits including increased resistance to contact fatigue, bending fatigue, and scuffing, as well as increased surface cleanliness and drastically reduced friction. The precision material removal control of the ISF® Process also makes it an optimal method of repairing high-value components such as wind turbine gears, gas turbine compressor blades, and flight-critical aerospace gears. REM’s ISF® Process has been installed at hundreds of customer sites and has been a robust processing solution for over three decades. The ISF Process is also available as an outsource processing solution via one of REM’s facilities. Whether your needs are to increase the power density allowable of a gearbox, increase the efficiency of a gas turbine engine, improve the biocompatibility of a medical implant/component, or any of the other range of surface finish oriented requirements, REM Surface Engineering and our ISF® Process have the experience and expertise to meet your needs. Additive Manufacturing (AM)
We are AM Solutions–3D post processing technology. With over 80 years of cross-industry know-how, Rösler is among the worldwide leading suppliers of innovative solutions in the field of surface finishing.
In recent years, we have been increasingly dealing with requests for the surface finishing of 3D printed parts. In this sense, we have concluded quickly that, compared to traditional manufacturing processes, additive manufacturing poses entirely new challenges for post processing and surface finishing. For example, the unmachined surface of additively manufactured components is significantly rougher and also the more complex geometries make smoothing and polishing much more difficult. In addition to that, there are new challenges like unpacking, the removal of loose or sintered powder residues, and, of course, the removal of support structures. Often, these challenges are still solved manually, but this has a negative impact on cost effectiveness and reproducibility.
To meet these requirements in the best possible way, we established the brand AM Solutions - 3D post processing technology, which is responsible for developing and offering tailor-made equipment, process technologies, and consumables for the automated post processing of 3D printed components. Regardless of material, printing process, or production volume, we will find the best technical and most economical solution for your post processing requirements. Our experts are here to provide advice and support starting at the design phase of your parts to guarantee perfect post processing.
Shot Blasting
The range of machines from Rösler includes systems for precise compressed air blasting, wet blasting, as well as turbine blasting with highly efficient turbines, also known as blast wheels. Turbine shot blasting machines, or wheel blasters, are particularly well known for their low energy consumption, large blast coverage area, the so-called “hot spot” and achieving uniform surfaces.
Injector and pressure blasting systems are especially suited to small area applications and precision tasks, both automated and manual. They also allow the use of highly abrasive media, which cannot usually be used in turbine blasting machines, such as corundum, silicon carbides, glass beads and fine plastic granulate.
For descaling, de-rusting, paint stripping, de-sanding, deburring, cleaning and creating homogeneous surface finishes. Not many technical procedures have such a variety of uses as shot blasting, especially when it comes to metal surfaces. However, other materials, such as concrete, sandstone, glass, textiles, wood and plastics, can also be processed with machines from Rösler.
RHBE spinner hanger blast machines are used for processing delicate work pieces that cannot tumble over each other; also for heavy and large components with complex shapes.
The work pieces are placed on special carriers (“christmas tree”), which are then transported into the blast chamber. The simultaneous rotation and oscillation of the work piece carrier in front of the turbines ensures perfect, all-around shot blasting results.
RHBE machines are equally suitable for processing single components as well as entire work piece batches
Robust design allows multi-shift operation.
Optimal turbine placement around the blast chamber guarantees maximum performance with a minimum of wear.
Digitalization and process monitoring also play an increasingly important role in the field of shot blasting.
With Rösler Smart Solutions, we offer our customers a digital solution for all areas of process monitoring. From the quality of the components, to analyzing the operating parameters and even predictive maintenance. Finally, you are able to respond quicker to problems and faults, use active monitoring, reduce your processing costs and lots more.

Vibratory Finishing machines
Vibratory finishing is an efficient and cost-effective process that is ideal for mass volume finishing with little operator input time. This technique is often used to finish products made of metal, plastic, or ceramic and is a crucial step in the manufacturing process that improves the appearance, surface texture, and performance of products.
One of the most significant advantages of vibratory finishing is its ability to handle large volumes of parts at once, saving time and reducing labour costs. The process involves placing parts in a vibratory tumbler along with media and compounds that act as abrasives. As the tumbler vibrates, the media rubs against the parts, smoothing out any rough edges, removing burrs, and creating a more uniform surface. This means that a large number of parts can be finished at the same time, which helps reduce the turnaround times for orders, increases production efficiency, and saves costs.
Another benefit of the vibratory finishing process is that it requires little operator input time. Once the parts are loaded into the tumbler and the appropriate media and compounds added, the operator can leave the machine to run, freeing up time to complete other tasks. This reduces the need for personnel to supervise the finishing process, which saves costs and adds to the bottom line.
In addition to the time and cost savings, vibratory finishing is also known for its high precision. The process ensures that parts are finished uniformly, regardless of shape or size. This precision helps in achieving high levels of quality control, especially when used in industries that require high-quality finishes for their products, such as aerospace or medical device manufacturing.
In conclusion, vibratory finishing is an excellent choice for mass volume finishing of parts that require high-quality finishes, uniformity, and minimal operator input time. The process saves costs, increases efficiency, and ensures high-precision finishes that meet or exceed customer expectations. Companies that use vibratory finishing can, therefore, maintain a competitive edge by producing superior products at lower costs.
Tumbling machine single phase
Single phase tumbling machines are an excellent tool for finishing components after their manufacture. The technology behind these machines involves subjecting the parts to a mechanical tumbling process, often involving some form of abrasive media. This process is highly effective at removing machining marks, surface imperfections, and burrs from 3D components.
Single-phase tumbling machines differ from traditional finishing processes in several ways. They are generally more efficient, more cost-effective, and faster. The tumbling process works by placing the components into a rotating barrel, where they are then tumbled along with abrasive media. This media can be composed of various materials, including ceramic, metal, or plastic.
The rotating barrel continuously moves the components against the abrasive media, creating a uniform finish across the entire surface area of the part. This process is highly effective at removing sharp edges, rough surfaces, and unwanted burrs. The finishing process not only improves the appearance of the 3D components but also enhances their functional properties, such as durability and resistance to wear and tear.
When compared to traditional manual finishing techniques, single-phase tumbling machines offer numerous advantages. First, they can process a vast volume of components simultaneously, making them ideal for mass production. The production rate of a single-phase tumbling machine is significantly higher than that of traditional finishing processes, reducing both production time and cost.
The consistent quality offered by tumbling machines is also noteworthy because it improves the functional and aesthetic properties of components. The process creates a consistent finish across the entire surface area, ensuring that the parts meet specific tolerances and standards. The use of special abrasives in these machines also ensures a high accuracy of machined parts.
Single-phase tumbling machines also prevent the need for manual finishing, improving worker safety, and reducing production costs. Manual finishing is often a labour-intensive process that requires skilled operators and considerable time to achieve the desired finish. With tumbling machines, the process is simplified; operators load the components into the barrel, and the machine does the rest. This prevents potential safety hazards associated with manual finishing and reduces the time required for the entire production process.
Another benefit of single-phase tumbling machines is that they can effectively finish parts with complex geometries. Parts that have multi-angled surfaces or intricate designs can be challenging to finish manually. The tumbling machines, however, are designed to reach these hard-to-reach areas, ensuring a consistent finish over the entire surface area of the part.
Single-phase tumbling machines are also versatile in use, meaning they can be used for a wide range of applications. The types of materials used within the abrasive media can be altered, meaning machines can finish different types of metals, plastics and ceramics. This makes them suitable for use in different industries, including aerospace, automotive, electronics, and medical devices.
In conclusion, single-phase tumbling machines are an effective and efficient tool for finishing 3D components manufactured from metals and plastics. They offer numerous advantages over traditional finishing methods, including improving the quality and consistency of surface finishes, refining complex geometries and shapes, and reducing production time and costs. The versatility of single-phase tumbling machines makes them a valuable investment for manufacturers of all sizes.

Liquid Compounds
Surface finishing materials are essential for creating a polished and attractive appearance for various products. These materials are used in a wide range of industries, from automotive to construction and are essential for achieving a high-quality finish. While traditional methods of surface finishing, such as sanding and polishing, are still prevalent, chemical liquid compounds are gaining popularity for their unique benefits.
Speed
One of the most significant advantages of using chemical liquid compounds to improve surface finishing materials is the speed at which you can achieve the desired finish. Unlike traditional methods, which can take hours, chemical liquid compounds can produce a high-quality finish in a matter of minutes. This is because the chemical reaction occurring between the compound and the surface creates a smooth and polished surface, without requiring manual effort.
For businesses that require speedy results, the use of chemical liquid compounds can help them increase their productivity significantly. By reducing the amount of labour required, companies can complete projects more efficiently and meet their deadlines more effectively. Additionally, the time saved can be used for other essential tasks, such as quality control, to ensure that the finished product meets the required standards.
Protection
In addition to improving the appearance of the surface, chemical liquid compounds can also provide protection against corrosion and wear. These compounds can prevent environmental factors, such as moisture and dust, from damaging the surface and extend the lifespan of the product. This benefit is especially valuable in industries such as automotive and aerospace, where the surface needs to withstand harsh conditions.
Additionally, chemical liquid compounds can be customized to fit specific needs, such as scratch resistance or water resistance. This customization ensures that the surface finishing materials have the ideal properties necessary to protect the product against potential damage.
Appearance
The appearance of the finished product is a critical factor in determining its marketability. Chemical liquid compounds can produce a smooth and polished surface that is aesthetically appealing. The compounds can remove surface imperfections and enhance the natural lustre of the material. This improved appearance is often desirable in industries such as construction, where the appearance of the building materials can affect the overall design of the building.
In addition, chemical liquid compounds can create unique finishes, allowing businesses to differentiate themselves from their competitors. They can achieve a range of finishes, including matte, glossy, or metallic, to match the desired aesthetics. This customization can help companies create unique finishes that are aesthetically appealing and in line with their brand.
Other Benefits
Apart from the benefits discussed above, using chemical liquid compounds in surface finishing materials has other advantages. For instance, the compounds can be used on uneven surfaces, which may not be possible with traditional methods. This ability ensures that the surface has a consistent finish, regardless of its shape or complexity.
Additionally, the use of chemical liquid compounds can reduce the environmental impact of surface finishing. These compounds can replace harmful chemicals traditionally used in surface finishing, reducing the amount of waste generated and the exposure of workers to toxic substances.
Control Units
PLCs are the preferred method of controlling, measuring, and carrying out tasks in complex manufacturing and industrial applications because they work nicely with other systems including ours.
